The Mucem (Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations) is an emblematic cultural venue located in Marseille . Here are some fascinating details about its architecture:
Location : The Mucem is located on the old J4 pier , facing the sea. It is the heart of the museum, hosting major exhibitions and artistic events.
Building design : Designed by architect Rudy Ricciotti (in association with Roland Carta), the Mucem building is a remarkable feat of engineering and aesthetics.
Structure :
The building forms a perfect square of 72 meters on each side.
It is supported by 309 arborescent pillars , surrounding the exhibition halls, which free the center of the building from any load-bearing function.
These pillars are made of UHPC (Ultra High Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete) , a material that is both flexible and resistant.
Exhibition spaces :
Level 0 : The semi-permanent exhibition, the Galerie de la Méditerranée (1,600 m²), is modular and changes every three to five years.
Level 2 : Temporary exhibitions (2,000 m²) with modular spaces ranging from 300 m² to 2,000 m².
Other facilities :
A 335-seat auditorium for lectures, performances, concerts and film screenings.
An audiovisual projection space called “La Médinathèque” in collaboration with the INA.
A children’s area called “Treasure Island” .
A bookstore, a brasserie and a restaurant with a panoramic terrace.
Night illumination : At night, the soft lights of artist Yann Kersalé make the building a new beacon at the gates of Marseille.
The architecture of Mucem combines technical prowess and aesthetic power, making it a globally recognized masterpiece. From the roof terrace, a suspended black concrete walkway extends towards Fort Saint-Jean , defying gravity and showcasing the exceptional properties of UHPC.
