The Old Port of Marseille 

The  Old Port of Marseille , also called  “lo Pòrt Vièlh”  in Provençal, is the oldest port in the city and the historical and cultural center since Antiquity. The Old Port dates back to ancient times and was the economic center of Marseille for centuries. It was open to trade from the Mediterranean Sea and French colonies.
Ancient origins

The Old Port dates back to Greek and Roman Antiquity.
It was a vital commercial port for maritime trade in the Mediterranean.
Middle Ages  :
In the Middle Ages, the port was a place of intense activity with merchants, fishermen and artisans.
It was fortified to protect against invasions.
15th to 17th centuries  :
During this period, the Old Port prospered thanks to maritime trade.
It was open to trade from the Mediterranean Sea and French colonies.
18th and 19th centuries  :
The construction of the  new port  moved commercial port activities to other sites further north.
The Old Port has become a marina.
20th century  :
The Old Port has become a popular gathering place and one of the symbols of Marseille.
It is also an intermodal transport hub with a metro station, buses and maritime services.
Nowadays, a small market offers direct sales of fresh fish.

The Old Port is shared between the districts:
Hôtel-de-Ville  (2nd arrondissement) to the north,
Opéra  (1st arrondissement) to the southeast,
Saint-Victor  (7th arrondissement) to the south,
Le Pharo  (7th arrondissement) at the South West.
Symbol of Marseille  :
The Old Port is a popular gathering place and one of the symbols of the city.
It is also an intermodal transport hub with a metro station, numerous buses and several maritime services, including the ferry.
There is a small market there where you can buy fresh fish directly.
Popular culture  :
It is anchored in popular culture thanks to the Marseille Trilogy by Marcel Pagnol, with the figures of César and Marius at the “Bar de la Marine” and that of Fanny, the beautiful fishwife in love with Marius.
The Old Port is a place steeped in history and authenticity, where traditions, maritime pleasures and encounters combine.
